Where is Edgewood in Houston?

Edgewood is located in southwest Houston, between Briar Forest and West University Place. It borders the Shepherd Park neighborhood to the west, the Montrose community to the north, the Hyde Park community to the east, and the Meyerland area to the south. Edgewood is located in the southwest part of Houston which is the fastest growing area of the city. It lies between the Montrose corridor and the Museum District and is surrounded by high-profile institutions like the Museum of Natural Science, the Texas Medical Center and Rice University.

 

What is the history of Edgewood?

The area that is now Edgewood was first inhabited by Native Americans around 105 CE. The first European to set foot in the area was Spanish explorer Alonso Alvarez de Pineda, who explored the coast of Texas in 1519. The area remained under Spanish rule until 1821 when they abandoned the area. The area was mostly used as a cattle ranch until the 1880s when wealthy Houstonians began buying up large tracts of land in the area. At this time, the name Edgewood was first used to describe this area. Which was likely derived from the name of the plant genus, “Edgeworthia,” which is a type of flowering shrub.
