History of Go Texan Day
Starting in 1954 as the idea of Archer Romero, who encouraged everyone wear Western clothes to promote livestock show and rodeo that year at Sam Houston Coliseum. Later, just as Fat Stock Show grew out of its humble beginnings at Sam Houston Hall and then added rodeo on coliseum’s grounds before moving into Astrodome, so too did Go Texan Day .
The event is now nearly 70 years old with it being an almost accepted fact that no matter how metropolitan city thinks they are there will always be plenty wearing cowboy costumes on Friday before Rodeo happens.

Go Texan Day is a Houstonian tradition that celebrates the Lone Star State’s culture and heritage. It’s a day for Texans and Texans-at-heart to enjoy delicious Texas food, drinks and entertainment.
Go Texan Day is the unofficial kickoff of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo that started in the 1950’s. It also, represents Western Heritage and a great opportunity to celebrate by wearing their best western wear!
How to celebrate Go Texan Day
You can celebrate Go Texan Day by heading downtown to enjoy the Rodeo Roundup, go watch the Trail Rides as they make their way to Memorial Park, then make your way over to the World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Cookoff Contest. Wear your best Western attire, jeans, cowboy boots, hats and your plaid button shirts. Have some fun with this holiday and enjoy what makes Texas so special!
